John's story: regaining mental health

John was detained in hospital. The treating team wanted to transfer him out of the Bristol area to a specialist mental health unit for people with hearing impairments. We successfully argued that any benefits of moving would be outweighed by his family no longer being close enough to provide support.

John was subsequently transferred back home. We advised him on his wish to take more responsibility to manage his own affairs. After our representations, John’s Care Coordinator accepted that concerns about John’s vulnerability and capacity were historic. John can now
gradually increase his independence to manage his own affairs with support from local services. This has increased his participation in family and community life,
and enabled public services to be utilised supporting other people.
