Volunteers support various projects here and play a huge part in changing the lives of members of the community.

Our volunteer Reception Administrators create a friendly and professional first point of contact for our clients and visitors, helping them access the right information to deal with their enquiry.

This is an integral role and each volunteer brings something uniquely valuable to the team, be it specialised knowledge from their studies and employment, a language, or life experience.

Volunteer Reception Administrator

Responsible to: Volunteer Coordinator

Location: 2 Hide Market, West Street, Bristol, BS2 0BH

Purpose of the role:

You will play an important part in creating a friendly and professional first point of contact to our clients and visitors as well as increasing our capacity to support clients through assisting the case workers with general administration.

  • The feeling of making a real difference to the lives of vulnerable or disadvantaged people in Bristol
  • Able to claim reasonable expenses e.g. travel
  • A written statement of recommendation which can be used for future employment

Tasks:

  • Welcoming clients and visitors to the law centre
  • Answering the phone, responding to emails and answering queries face to face
  • Signposting callers and visitors to other agencies where appropriate
  • Booking appointments for our volunteer solicitors
  • Completing general admin tasks for the solicitors e.g. sending letters and updating case files
  • Keeping the reception area neat and orderly to provide a welcoming atmosphere for visitors

Person Specification:

  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Packages such as Word, Outlook and Excel
  • Friendly, approachable and non-judgemental manner
  • A commitment to equal opportunities and confidentiality
  • Community language skills are very useful, although not essential
  • You will adhere to our policies on confidentiality and equal opportunities
  • Ability to speak more than one language is very useful, although not essential

Tenancy Information Volunteer

All candidates must be able to attend a training session on 25th July.

Responsible to: Volunteer Coordinator

Location: 2 Hide Market, West St, Bristol, BS2 0BH

 

Purpose of the role:

You will be increasing the number of clients the Law Centre can help by providing tenants with information about their legal rights and responsibilities; raising awareness of alternative ways to resolve disputes; and increasing confidence to resolve issues independently.

  • First-hand experience providing housing information to clients, including those with additional needs
  • Gain broad knowledge of housing & tenancy information/rights & responsibilities as well as alternative dispute resolution options
  • The sense of making a valuable and positive impact on the people you help
  • Working as part of a highly experienced and knowledgeable team
  • Ability to claim reasonable expenses e.g. travel
  • A written statement of recommendation which you can use for future employment

Role Description:

  • To provide one-off 30-minute appointments with people who need information and signposting on their rights and responsibilities as a tenant. This may either be face to face or via telephone.
  • Access and become familiar with a wide range of resources around housing/tenancies
  • Write up brief meeting notes after each session and keep track of commonly asked questions/concerns
  • Identify and escalate issues to the housing team or referring to other specialist services where necessary
  • Send letters to tenant and/or landlords (if required) outlining the information you have given to the client

Person Specification:

  • You will be patient with an open and non-judgemental manner with the ability to work with disadvantaged people
  • You will be an excellent communicator as well as IT literate with the ability to access a range of digital resources
  • You will adhere to our policies on confidentiality and equal opportunities
  • Ability to speak more than one language is very useful, although not essential
  • It would be preferable if you could volunteer for at least 6 months after receiving training.
